Tips

Here are a few tips that will help you make the most of the Gabriola Events website.

How the main page works

When you view the site’s home page, you’ll see all the recently-added events. The newest content is at the top; older posts are under that. As more and more new events are added, the older entries will be pushed further down the page. After a while the oldest stuff won’t appear on the main page anymore.

To view older content

On the home page you’ll see an archives section in the sidebar. Click on any month in that list to see the events posted during that month.

Or visit the events calendar page and navigate to the month you want. Many events are linked to more information. If you click on a linked event, you’ll get to those details. (If you click on a non-linked event, nothing will happen.)

To see more of a post

Sometimes only part of a post appears on the main page. You’ll need to click a link that says something like Read the rest of this entry if you want to see more of that event listing.

To see just one post

The home page lists many events. Maybe you’d like to see only the one you’re interested in — maybe so you can bookmark it, or send its URL (web address) to a friend. To see just one event, click on the event’s title heading. (If you rest your mouse on that heading, a little popup thing will say ‘Permanent link to…’ so you’ll know you’re in the right place.)

Once you’ve clicked and are viewing a single post only, you can add a comment, if comments are enabled. You’ll see a link to the post’s RSS feed, in case you want to follow other people’s comments on the post. (See subscribe page to learn about RSS.)

To view a category

Every event is posted in a catgegory, or sometimes in several categories. When you read a post, you might notice that it’s posted in the music category, or in the food category. If you click the name of that category, you’ll see all the other events posted in that category.

If you’re only interested in a certain category of events, you might like to subscribe to that event category using RSS. The subscribe page explains what RSS is and how to use it. This page explains how to find the RSS feed for the category you want.

Calendar page tips

The Gabriola Events Calendar displays the current month when you first view it. Note that there are links to the previous month and the next month, too — click those to navigate to the month you want.

When you’re looking at the Gabriola Events Calendar, rest your mouse on an entry to see more details. Some events are linked to web pages that contain more information. Click on any entry in the calendar to go to an associated post or page, if there is one. If an event isn’t linked to more information, nothing will happen.

You might notice that events on the calendar that are linked to more information are in one colour (green, at the moment) while events that aren’t linked are in another colour (grey, at the moment). So the colour scheme will help you figure out if an event is linked to a web page or not.
