What is RSS?

RSS stands for really simple syndication, but I prefer to think of it as really splendid stuff. It brings all the news from your favourite websites to you – and you don’t even have to visit those sites to get their updates.

Want to try it? You’ll use a thing called an aggregator. That can be a special website, a free software program, or even your email program. The aggregator will do all the work for you. You take a few seconds to tell the aggregator what websites you want to follow. After that, it collects all the updates from the sites you’ve specified. When you want to see what’s new, you peek at your aggregator, and see at a glance which sites have updated since you last checked.

When your aggregator shows you that gabriola-events.ca has new content, you just click on the site’s name, and you’ll see all the event updates.

Gabriola-events.ca isn’t the only website you can follow this way. Millions of sites offer RSS feeds, which means that you can use RSS aggregators to follow them. You could follow all your favorite news websites and blogs this way!
