Here you’ll find information about six events that are part of ArtStart 2009, presented by the Gabriola Arts Council and the Dancing Man Festival. ArtStart includes workshops on hip-hop beat making, song writing, swing dance, dance for kids, hip-hop for youth, and burlesque for women.

Wednesday, July 22nd

Hip-hop beat-making for youth and adults

Basic techniques with Sweatshop Union member Colin McCue. Wednesday, July 22nd from 5 to 6 pm at the Roxy. Cost is 5.00. Free for those 16 and under.

Thursday, July 23rd

The creative process in song writing

An open dialogue, along with a question and answer period about the creative process in songwriting with Danny Schimdt. Thursday, July 23rd from 7 to 8pm at the Roxy. Cost is 5.00. Free for those 16 and under.

Friday, July 24th

Swing Dance

An introduction to swing dancing with David Seath. (More about David here.) Friday, July 24th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Gabriola Community Hall. Cost is 5.00. Free for those 16 and under.

Saturday, July 25th

Dance for Kids

(For youth and young children). An introduction to movement with music with Mara Brenner. Saturday, July 25th from 2 pm to 2:45 pm at the outdoor stage at Descanso Regional Park. This event is free for those who are attending the Kerplunks show.

Hip Hop for Youth

An introduction to Hip Hop dancing with Celeste Lyon. Saturday, July 25th from 4-5 pm, at the Descanso Bay Park outdoor stage. Cost is 5.00. Free for those 16 and under.

Sunday, July 26th

Burlesque

An introduction to the history, philosophy and movement of Burlesque performance with Champagne Sparkles. Sunday, July 26th, from 1 to 3 pm at the Rose Crystal Studio. This event is for women only; participants must be at least 18 years old. Cost is 5.00.
